What Sets Green Forest Veterinary Hospital Apart

Our doctors have experience performing a wide range of surgical procedures, including:

  • Spays and neuters
  • Eye surgery
  • Bladder surgery
  • Tumor removal
  • Gastrointestinal surgeries
  • Orthopedic surgeries
  • Cancer surgeries
  • Skin surgery
  • Thyroid surgery
  • Cesarean sections

At Green Forest Veterinary Hospital, our medical team fully understands the decision to allow your pet to undergo surgery is never easy. To that end, we're happy to answer any questions regarding your pet's surgery. All patients requiring surgery will receive a pre-surgical physical exam, during which your veterinarian is available to address any concerns you may have. We also work with a board-certified surgeon for most orthopedic surgeries and more complex soft tissue procedures.

Customized Anesthesia Protocol

The most important element of our surgical services at Green Forest Veterinary Hospital isn't an advanced piece of equipment or a modern procedure - it's how much we care. When your cherished companion undergoes a procedure involving anesthesia at our animal hospital, we make a commitment to provide by-the-minute, personalized attention and monitoring, making absolutely certain that your pet's condition is monitored constantly.

To ensure the health and safety of your pet during surgery, our Glen Cove veterinary team utilizes a multi-parameter monitoring and anesthesia system that reflects the highest principles and ideals of quality care. Prior to surgery, your pet is examined and a pre-surgical blood screen is performed. The results of these tests (along with your pet's past anesthetic history, breed, preexisting conditions, and age) are used to create an individualized anesthesia protocol.

During any surgical procedure, our dedicated team takes every possible precaution to ensure your pet's safety and comfort, utilizing our monitoring system. The monitoring system, which is carefully checked and logged every five minutes by one of our technicians, tracks:

  • Blood pressure
  • Heart rate
  • Respiratory rate
  • Body temperature
  • Blood oxygen level
  • ECG

Every patient receives an IV catheter, and we also utilize a warming system that carefully maintains your pet's body temperature during the procedure. For longer procedures, an IV fluid warmer can also help maintain body temperature.

Comprehensive Pain Management

We all know pain hurts, but pain also has many other detrimental effects on your pet's body. Pain slows healing, decreases activity and causes behavioral changes such as aggression, anxiety and depression. Pain can worsen diseases like arthritis and potentially some cancers. It also interferes with the bond between you and your pet.

As part of our commitment to keep your pet comfortable and protect the bond you share, we practice the most up-to-date and comprehensive pain management protocols. For surgeries as well as for acute and chronic conditions we use all our available and safe resources, including opioids, local anesthetics, NSAIDs (non-steroidal medications) and oral and injectable analgesics for the complete comfort of your pet. Natural alternatives are also available. Acupuncture can also be used as part of pain management protocol.

Tender Love and Care for Your PetPostoperative Care for a Full Recovery

After surgery all patients are kept warm and comfortable and are closely monitored to assure the right start to the healing process. The time your pet will be monitored after surgery varies. In some cases, animals will need to remain in our hospital overnight; in others, they can be sent home the same day.

When your pet is discharged from the hospital, we will provide you detailed information on how to properly care for your pet at home after surgery. If any questions arise after your pet returns home or at any other time during the postoperative period, call us. We are happy to do all we can to ensure your pet's full recovery.
